Hastings Natural History ReservationImpressed with the MVZ's publication of a report on Pt. Lobos, California in 1936, Frances Simes Hastings offerred her 1,600-acre ranch in Upper Carmel Valley to the University of California as a biological reserve for research and education involving long-term natural history studies. She also provided financial sponsorship to the project. In 1965 the Reservation became one of the seven original sites in the U.C. Natural Reserve System, prized for its representative sampling of plants and animals characteristic of California's Central Coast Range and its long history of being protected from development. While facilities for onsite classroom activities are currently limited, Hastings offers a wealth of educational information online. Laboratory of Human Evolutionary StudiesEstablished by Clark Howell in 1970, the Laboratory for Human Evolutionary Studies is internationally recognized as a center for the study of human origins and evolution. In addition to their roles as faculty members and graduate students, researchers in the lab spend several months each year conducting fieldwork in Asia and Africa. What has emerged from the material that they have excavated are fossil remains that have fundamentally changed our understanding of the process and products of human evolution. Berkeley Natural History MuseumsThe Museum of Vertebrate Zoology is one of six
institutions on the U.C. Berkeley campus dedicated to research and conservation
of the earth's dwindling biodiversity. Together, these museums form a
consortium
whose mission is to foster collaborative research and to promote public
understanding of the importance and value of natural history and anthropology
collections. |
