Searching SPIRO:

Fielded Searches are more specific and more useful than keyword searches. To assist you in entering the proper terms, use the linked look-up lists to learn the exact terms to enter in the correct input box. Most of the fielded search input fields support behind-the-scenes hierarchic searching. Note that use of the wildcard % in fielded searches makes unavailable the benefits of hierarchic searching. You may limit fielded searches by date range or period-topic from the pull-down menu. Fielded searches will not return more than 1200 images, or 100 pages.

Searching SPIRO:

Keyword Searches are simpler and less exact than fielded searches. Use quotes around phrases. Capitalize the Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT. The wildcard character in keyword searches is *. You may limit keyword searches by date range or period-topic from the pull-down menu. Keyword searches will not return more than 120 images, or 10 pages. When a keyword search is limited by date or period-topic, that limit will be applied to the first 1200 images returned.
